Answers to common questions and everything in between.

YŪ SEI Matcha

Why is YŪ SEI different?

YŪ SEI is not another matcha brand built around trends, exaggerated claims or borrowed labels.

We source exceptional Japanese matcha and present it with honesty: where it comes from, how it was made and what you can expect in the bowl.

Everything else is left to the experience.

Is your matcha ceremonial grade?

No. Japan does not grade matcha as “ceremonial”, “premium” or “café grade”.

These terms were created to market matcha outside Japan. They have no official definition, no agreed standard and no recognised grading authority behind them.

A brand can place “ceremonial grade” on almost any matcha it chooses.

YŪ SEI does not use invented grades. We tell you what actually matters: origin, harvest, cultivation, production and taste.

Is single-origin matcha better?

No. Single origin simply tells you that a tea came from one defined source. It does not guarantee quality.

In Japan, blending is a highly respected craft. Skilled tea masters combine leaves from different cultivars, gardens or harvest lots to create greater balance, depth and consistency.

Many of Japan’s most respected matcha houses are celebrated for their blending expertise. It is not a compromise or a way to disguise inferior tea. At its best, it is the final act of craftsmanship.

Single-origin matcha can be exceptional. So can a blend. The words on the tin matter less than the knowledge behind the tea.

What is YŪ SEI matcha made from?

Nothing but 100% Japanese matcha.

No sweeteners.
No flavourings.
No fillers.
No additives.

Where is your matcha from?

Our matcha is sourced from Uji, Kyoto, a region shaped by centuries of Japanese tea cultivation and craftsmanship.

Which harvest is it?

YŪ SEI matcha is made using first-harvest tea leaves, known in Japan as ichibancha.

These young spring leaves are carefully selected for their colour, aroma and balanced character.

Which cultivars are used?

YŪ SEI matcha is crafted from a blend of Okumidori and Yabukita.

Is your matcha stone-milled?

Yes. The finished tencha leaves are slowly ground using traditional granite stone mills in Japan.

This gradual process creates the fine texture needed for a smooth, balanced bowl.

Can I enjoy YŪ SEI matcha every day?

Yes.

It can begin the morning, accompany an afternoon pause or simply create a moment in the day that belongs to you.

There is no prescribed time for stillness.

Is YŪ SEI matcha suitable for lattes?

Yes.

YŪ SEI matcha was chosen to be enjoyed traditionally as usucha or koicha, where its complete character can be experienced. However, its smoothness and balance also allow it to pair beautifully with milk.

Is YŪ SEI matcha vegan?

Yes. YŪ SEI contains only pure Japanese matcha and no animal-derived ingredients.

Is YŪ SEI matcha gluten-free?

Matcha is naturally free from gluten, and YŪ SEI contains no added ingredients.

It is not currently presented as independently certified gluten-free.

Preparation

How should I prepare YŪ SEI matcha?

Sift 2–4g of matcha into a bowl.

Add water heated to approximately 70–80°C, then whisk briskly in an “M” motion until the surface becomes smooth with a fine, even layer of foam.

Enjoy it as it is or add more water to taste.

How much matcha should I use?

Begin with 2g for usucha or 4g for koicha.

The right amount is ultimately the one that tastes right to you.

What temperature should the water be?

We recommend water between 70°C and 80°C.

Boiling water can overwhelm matcha’s more delicate qualities and bring bitterness forward.

Do I need a bamboo whisk?

You do not need one, but we recommend it.

A bamboo whisk, or chasen, disperses the fine powder evenly and creates the smooth texture and delicate foam traditionally associated with matcha.

Why should I sift the matcha?

Matcha is ground into an exceptionally fine powder and naturally settles into small clumps.

Sifting separates the particles before water is added, helping the matcha whisk more evenly and creating a smoother bowl.

Why is my matcha clumping?

Small clumps are natural and do not indicate poor quality.

Because matcha is extremely fine and sensitive to moisture, the powder can gather together during storage. A quick sift before preparation is usually all it needs.

Why is my matcha not foaming?

Foam is affected by the amount of water, its temperature, the shape of the bowl and your whisking technique.

Use a wide bowl, keep the whisk just above its base and move quickly from the wrist rather than stirring in circles.

The aim is a fine, even surface - not large bubbles.

Can I prepare matcha without a whisk?

Yes. A handheld frother or sealed shaker can disperse matcha, although the texture will differ from a bowl prepared with a bamboo whisk.

Can I use boiling water?

We would not recommend it.

Water that is too hot can flatten the aroma and emphasise bitterness. Allow freshly boiled water to cool before pouring.

How should I store YŪ SEI matcha?

Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, heat, moisture and strong odours. After opening, close the tin securely after each use and consume within 8 weeks for optimum freshness. Keep the freshness keeper inside the tin. Do not eat or open the sachet.

How long will it stay fresh after opening?

For the best colour, aroma and flavour, we recommend enjoying YŪ SEI matcha within four to eight weeks of opening.

Keep the freshness keeper inside the tin. Do not eat or open the sachet.
